Vale Emeritus Professor Peter FitzRoy
Monash Business School is deeply saddened by the passing of Emeritus Professor Peter FitzRoy, who died on 16 November, aged 80.
He joined Monash in 1976 as Professor of Administration in the faculty of Economics and Politics (now Monash Business School).
Professor FitzRoy made an important and long contribution to Monash University.
A young Peter FitzRoy, a Senior Research Fellow at Manchester Business School in the United Kingdom (and a former assistant professor at universities in the United States and Canada), was appointed Professor of Marketing at Monash University in 1976.
Prof FitzRoy has seen the discipline morph from a few electives in the MBA program in the 1970s to become a major player during the Dawkins Revolution of the ’80s and ’90s, which saw mass amalgamations of tertiary institutions.
In 1990, Monash University merged with the Chisholm Institute of Technology, bringing together Chisholm’s well-regarded David Syme School of Business with Monash’s respected Faculty of Economics. In 1996, Prof FitzRoy was appointed head of the department of marketing.
His career as a Professor of Marketing in this faculty (under its various names) spanned 39 years and saw many significant events, including the merger of Monash with the Chisholm Institute of Technology.
Peter formally retired in 2001, but he continued to teach in the MBA program for many more years, and only last year completed a new edition of his co-authored textbook on Strategic Management.
Peter FitzRoy was known to his students and colleagues as a stimulating and supportive person with a strong intellect and an infectious sense of humour. He made significant contributions to the marketing and management disciplines at Monash and internationally as a scholar, teacher and mentor.
The Monash Business School community acknowledges with gratitude the life and work of Professor Peter Trevor FitzRoy, and extends its deepest sympathy to his wife Margaret and his family.
A memorial service to celebrate Peter’s life will be held at the Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club, 489 Glenferrie Road, Kooyong on Tuesday, 29 November from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm. The family has requested donations to Cabrini Palliative Care instead of floral tributes.
