Stephen attributes his most recent career move to SMEC as the Manager Geotechnics and Tunnels directly to the completion of the Monash MBA in 2013.

Juggling renovating a home, starting a new family, working and beginning the MBA program all at the same time was a challenge to say the least. However, this experience has been truly rewarding.

The leadership development aspects of the Monash MBA program, as well as the group in-company projects, provided me with the direct opportunity to apply academic skills to the real management issues. The mix of soft and hard management skills complement my engineering skill-set well.  This allows me to be a more rounded manager and view the world through a slightly different prism than my purely technical colleagues.

My advice to those considering an MBA is to take into account how the MBA will fit within the frame of your overall career goals, where you want to go in your career and how it will develop you both academically and personally. But also be aware that the MBA will challenge you and develop you in ways that you will not expect.

It takes you outside of your comfort zone, challenges you and provides you with the tools to think laterally and provide creative solutions.  It has helped me grow both professionally and personally.  I am more confident and I attribute that to the foundation set of skills, knowledge and friendships developed during the course of the program.
